In 1996 he took 9th place at the World Games Invitational tournament in Washington DC. The division he participated in was ironically entitled Self-Defense. As a youth, he was bullied very heavily and that, as well as an ill-advised viewing of a very violent &#8220;based on a true story&#8221; movie about a brutal public murder in NYC in his early childhood left him with a burning desire to see people free from bullying and worse forms of violence.
